Jonathan Barkat grew up in Cape May, New Jersey and attended college in Philadelphia. After graduation he moved to New York where he lived for six years before returning to Philadelphia. Though he first enjoyed working with a camera in high school, the first part of his college years were spent painting and drawing before turning again to photography. This background in painting and drawing informs his work and approach to image making. His work has been recognized by Communication Arts, Photo District News, and the International Photography Awards. In addition to commissioned work he spends as much time as possible shooting personal images.
